Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. [Virginia], circa 1861-1863. Full thermoplastic case with geometric design.
An exemplary portrait of an early-war Confederate recruit, posed with his musket at his side and the Confederate First National flag pinned proudly to his chest.
This striking image captures the moment of transition from citizen to soldier, conveyed through the juxtaposition of civilian clothing with military arms and accoutrements. Central to the composition is the small, likely homespun, Confederate flag affixed to his lapel, delicately hand-tinted by the photographer. On close inspection, the viewer can discern the individual stars within the blue canton.
The young infantryman wears a buff white belt fitted with cartridge box and eagle breast plate buckle, probably drawn from federal stores or a pre-war militia supply. His musket appears to be a .69 caliber conversion, of the type widely pressed into service at the war’s outset. Completing his ensemble is a wheel cap, a style frequently associated with early Southern volunteers.
Period views featuring any Confederate flag remain exceedingly scarce and highly-prized.
