Partly printed document completed in manuscript signed by Col. Thomas S. Allen. Halls Hill, Virginia, 20 June 1865. 1 page, 4to 8 1/2 x 11 in. Docketing of payment to recto.
A discharge document for Assistant Surgeon William W. Allen of the 5th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers. Allen is described as being born in Cuba, New York, and is listed as being twenty-nine years of age. No other description is provided other than his enrollment as a physician. The document is signed by Union Colonel Thomas S. Allen (1825-1905).
William W. Allen enlisted on 1 October 1864 into the 5th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers, with the purpose of serving a three-year term service. It is noted that Allen also served in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteers, which was famously a part of the Iron Brigade. Written in manuscript around the document are details of the battles Allen served at including Gainesville, 2nd Bull Run, Cedar Hill, the Battle of Saylor's Creek, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, Gettysburg, and Antietam where he was wounded.
An interesting discharge document of a surgeon who partially served in the Iron Brigade, following the surrender of the Confederate army and subsequent end to the American Civil War.
