Vingetted bust-length albumen CDV portrait of John S. Mosby in major's uniform. Unmarked. Pencil identification alongside period ink inscription reading "M L Gibson."
A scarce view of John Singleton Mosby, the legendary "Gray Ghost.” Mosby served as a Confederate cavalry commander during the Civil War. His unit, the 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry, was known as Mosby’s Raiders. The Raiders were noted for their lightning-quick raids and ability to elude capture. The area of north-central Virginia where Mosby operated with impunity became known during the war as Mosby's Confederacy.
