- Lot Description
Autograph letter signed by H. Lindsley Pierce, Field & Staff, 5th Maryland Infantry. Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, 13 July 1863. 1 page, 8 1/2 x 4 3/4 in., half sheet of gray Confederate paper. With embossment to upper left corner.
This letter was written by assistant surgeon H. Lindsley Pierce while he was a prisoner of war in Libby Prison. He wrote to his wife, stating that “nothing under heaven will ever separate us again Katie, but death.” Unfortunately, Pierce was killed by prison guards at Libby Prison on 5 November 1863.
As part of the 5th Maryland Infantry, Pierce participated in the Battle of Antietam. It is unclear when he became a prisoner of war, but it is likely he was captured during the Second Battle of Winchester — most of the regiment was captured at this time.
