- Lot Description
Model 1860 Cavalry Saber. Ames Manufacturing Company: Chicopee, Massachusetts.
34 3/4in single-edge curved blade. Complete in iron scabbard with chocolate brown patina. Etched on the blade close to the ricasso is the maker’s imprint stating: “AMES MF&CO/CHICOPEE/ Mass.” On the reverse side close to the ricasso is etched: “US/ C.E.W./ 1864.” Blade is smooth and plain with only slight age-freckling. Elegant standard one-piece brass guard with knuckle bow. Leather handle wrapped in double-twisted gilt copper wiring. Decorated with a gold sword knot attached to the hilt.Along with the widely popular m1840 “wrist-breaker,” the lighter m1860 Cavalry Saber was a standard-issue sword during the Civil War, mostly carried by Union soldiers. The stamped initials on the blade near the ricasso are likely attributed to the original owner of the sword. Establishing itself originally in 1774, Ames Manufacturing Company became a prominent manufacturer of swords and light artillery, particularly during the Civil War, out of Chicopee, Massachusetts.
A beautiful example of a Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, which would have been popularly distributed amongst many Union soldiers.
