CIVIL WAR U.S. N.C.O. SWORD BALDRIC WITH EAGLE PLATE
N.C.O. Civil War baldric. Leather and brass. N.p., ca. mid-19th century. Flat approx. 27 1/2 in. Plate diam. approx. 2 1/2 in.
A Civil War period United States non-commissioned officer’s sword baldric, of black bridle leather, retaining its oval brass eagle plate at the front and fitted with sliding leather keeper and sword sling below. The broad shoulder strap, now with pronounced curvature from age and long storage, shows an appealing, undisturbed surface with scattered creasing, abrasions, and areas of wear commensurate with period use. The reverse has mellowed to a rich brown tone, while the brass plate, bearing the Federal eagle in relief, provides a handsome visual contrast against the dark leather.
Sword baldrics of this type formed an essential part of the accoutrement of Union non-commissioned officers, worn across the body to suspend the sword at the wearer’s side. More visually striking than the ordinary waist belt, the baldric offered a broad field for the display of national insignia.
A handsome and authentic Civil War N.C.O. accoutrement.
