Bullet struck wood relic, approx. 9 in. x in. 5 1/4 x 16 1/2 in.
A piece of white oak log, bearing a later marker inscription on the underside reading “White Oak Swamp '94.” Embedded within the wood is a visible bullet fragment, indicating the tree was struck by gunfire. The fragment likely indicates the log as a relic associated with the fighting at White Oak Swamp, preserving physical evidence of battlefield crossfire.
The Battle of White Oak Swamp was fought on June 30, 1862, during the Peninsula Campaign. As Union forces under George B. McClellan retreated toward the James River, Confederate forces commanded by Thomas J. Jackson attempted to intercept them. The engagement consisted largely of an artillery exchange across the swamp, as Confederate guns fired on Union rear guard positions. Although the Confederates failed to decisively halt the Union withdrawal, the fighting formed part of the larger series of engagements that forced McClellan’s army away from Richmond.
