Collection of 2 studio portrait albumen CDVs. Boston, MA: J. W. Black, 173 Washington St., [circa 1863-1864]. Photographer’s imprints to mount versos. Period ink and pencil identifications to mount versos read: "W. J. Bishop / Capt. 10th Mass. / 6th Corps Badge"; and "Very Resp'y / Your Obt. Servt. / W. J. Bishop / Capt. 10th Mass Infy."
This evocative two-piece lot documents the service and personal life of Captain William J. Bishop of the 10th Massachusetts Infantry. The collection features two distinct studio sittings by the renowned Boston photographer J. W. Black.
The first image is a superb seated portrait of Captain Bishop wearing an open officer's overcoat to prominently display his 6th Corps "Greek Cross" badge pinned to his frock coat. The reverse bears a bold period ink salutation and signature.
The second image is a striking double portrait capturing Bishop standing in his heavy overcoat beside a seated woman, presumably his wife. This view offers a poignant look at the personal bonds maintained by veteran officers during the grueling middle years of the conflict.
The 10th Massachusetts Infantry was a hard-fighting regiment primarily raised in the western part of the state. As part of the vaunted 6th Corps, the regiment saw intense combat throughout the Eastern Theater, from the Peninsula Campaign and Fredericksburg to the bloody engagements of the Overland Campaign. The prominent display of the 6th Corps badge in Bishop's solo portrait reflects the immense pride and unit identity that defined the veteran troops of the Army of the Potomac by 1863 and 1864.
