Collection of 10 albumen CDVs. Various photographers and locations, ca. 1863-5. Several mounts feature photographer's imprints and modern research identifications.
This highly visual collection features 10 cartes-de-visite dedicated exclusively to Union soldiers proudly wearing their distinctive corps badges. The archive presents a superb study of how these insignias were worn in the field and the studio, ranging from discreetly pinned badges on vests to prominent metallic devices on double-breasted frock coats. The reverses of the mounts offer a wealth of information, including prestigious photographer's backmarks from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York, alongside modern research notes identifying specific corps, including the Fourth, Sixth, 10th and 19th Corps.
Instituted initially by Gen. Joseph Hooker in the Army of the Potomac to boost morale and aid in battlefield identification, corps badges quickly became a fierce point of pride for the veteran soldiers of the Union army. Photographic examples of corps badges were among Rick's favorite genres to collect.
This lot includes:
1. Full-length standing portrait of a soldier wearing a distinct Sixth Corps cross badge on his dark coat, with a Wilmington, Delaware, photographer's imprint on the reverse.
2. Vignetted bust portrait of an officer wearing a distinctive 19th Corps fan-like cross badge on his chest, explicitly noted on the reverse alongside a Washington, D.C., gallery backmark.
3. Three-quarter length seated portrait of a pensive officer wearing an open coat and a prominent, light-colored Fifth Corps Maltese cross badge pinned to his vest.
4. Full-length standing portrait of an officer resting his hand on an ornate studio chair, displaying a cross-style corps badge on his coat, with modern pencil notes suggesting the 7th Michigan Infantry.
5. Full-length standing portrait of an officer resting his arm on a studio pedestal alongside his cap, wearing a corps badge on his left breast, with a Washington, D.C., imprint.
6. Full-length standing portrait of an officer holding his dark forage cap at his side, explicitly noted on the reverse as wearing a Sixth Corps cross badge.
7. Seated portrait of a heavily bearded field-grade officer wearing a sash and a highly visible cross badge, likely of the Sixth Corps, featuring a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, backmark.
8. Full-length standing portrait of an officer with his sword resting on the floor, wearing a cross-style badge on his uniform coat, with a New York gallery imprint.
9. Full-length portrait of a standing officer wearing a sash and proudly displaying a Fourth Corps triangle badge on his chest, with notes suggesting the 74th Illinois on the reverse.
10. Full-length standing portrait of an officer wearing a long, open overcoat over his uniform, noted on the reverse as displaying a 10th Corps four-bastion fort badge.

The images range from good to very good condition. The albumen surfaces exhibit varying degrees of age-related fading, minor surface wear and the soft tonality typical of period photography, but all retain strong clarity that allows the individual badges to be studied.
