Sherman & His Men. Full-length albumen CDV studio portrait. [New York: G.N. Barnard, 1865.]
This image, with circulating copies bearing the 1865 copyright of Mathew Brady, captures the impressive views of General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) and his staff all in uniform. While the copyright implies it is part of the Brady collection, the photograph itself can be attributed to George N. Barnard (1819-1902), who was the official photographer for Sherman and his Military Division of the Mississippi. It is pictured among the rest of his views taken while traveling with the Union army and published in a collection entitled Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign.
Seated directly in the middle, Sherman stares directly at the photographer’s lens with his arms crossed and one leg thrown over the other. Standing left to right are Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909), William Babcock Hazen (1830-1887), Jefferson Columbus Davis (1828-1979), and Joseph Anthony Mower (1827-1870). Seated to the left of Sherman is John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), with Henry Warner Slocum (1827-1894) to the right of him. This grouping of individuals offers the view of some of the most prominent commanders of the Western theater and the March to the Sea campaigns.
These men, nearing the end of their time in conflict, show the scars of their years in service. Oliver Otis Howard lost his right arm while leading his men against Confederate forces at the Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines in 1862. For this, he would receive the Medal of Honor, but the sleeve of his jacket can be seen in view, empty and draped to appear as if it is resting at his side.
