- Lot Description
A group of three (3) Union Civil War histories and a soldier-inscribed tactical manual. Works include:
1. Charles A. Stevens. Berdan’s United States Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac 1861-1865. St. Paul, Minnesota: [Price-McGill Co.], 1892. 8vo. Original dark green cloth gilt illustrated. FIRST EDITION. Eicher 1092; Nevin I, p. 162; Nicholson p. 801.
A "superb regimental history" (Nevins) of one of the most famous regiments of the Union Army, which especially distinguished itself at the Battles of Gettysburg and Spotsylvania Court House. Eicher notes that “the author’s literate and thoughtful reflections on personalities and battles add greatly to this history’s lasting value.”
2. George B. McClellan. Regulations and Instructions for the Field Service of the U.S. Cavalry in Time of War. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1861. 8vo. Original green cloth, spine gilt-lettered. INSCRIBED “The property of Jesse Hawes / Camp Douglas / Chicago P Ws”
The tactical manual of Jesse Hawes (1843-1901), inscribed while training in Chicago. He enlisted as a private on 12 September 1861, mustering a month later into Company I of the 9th Illinois Cavalry. The regiment fought in the Western Theater, most notably at the Battle of Nashville. He was captured and paroled at Pontotoc, Mississippi, on 12 July 1864. After the war, he moved west and settled in Greeley, Colorado.
