STUNNING, HIGH-GRADE PRESENTATION SWORD GIVEN 153RD INDIANA OFFICER DURING THE CIVIL WAR
Presentation M1850 staff & field officer's sword. Solingen, Germany: W. Clauberg. Ricasso reverse stamped with standing knight logo and "W / Clauberg / Solingen". Spine etched with "IRON PROOF". Blade features gold wash and acid-etched patriotic motifs. Approx. 38 in., blade approx. 31 1/2 in. Complete with metal scabbard with the following engraved: "Presented to / Capt. W.H. Carr / by the Members of / Co. I. / 153d. I.V.I."
A highly ornate W. Clauberg presentation sword given to Captain Carr of the 153rd Indiana. The blade retains much of its original gold wash and is richly adorned with acid-etched patriotic motifs. Opposite the foliate basket guard, centered with “US,” is an eagle-head quillon above an elaborate grip featuring a figural relief of Liberty. On the reverse of the grip, behind Lady Liberty, is a prominent red garnet, matching the smaller garnets set around the pommel. At the pommel cap is an empty mount where a final garnet, evidently intended to match the others, is now missing (easily restored).
Carr enlisted as a captain in Company I, 153rd Indiana, on 27 February 1865. The regiment spent most of its service in and around Louisville, Kentucky, where it was engaged in anti-guerrilla duty and stationed at Taylors Barracks.
