An artillery tangent sight crafted from sheet brass, with a curved, flanged base that allowed it to seat securely on a cannon’s base ring. The outer edge is formed into a sequence of stepped graduations, each stamped with elevation numbers corresponding to specific ranges for the gun. Stamped with the date 1840, this example was produced just prior to the Mexican War and may well have been in service during that conflict.
The face is dated 1840, placing its manufacture just prior to the Mexican War and suggesting it may have seen service during that conflict. The reverse is clearly stamped “Washington Arsenal”.
[Mexican War, Mexican-American War, Seminole Wars, Florida Wars] [Ordnance, Artillery, Ammunition, Arms & Armor, Guns]
