Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Signed by Jabez Demming Giddings (1814-1878). Washington County, Republic of Texas, 16 December 1841. 1 page, 4to, 7 7/8 x 9 1/4 in. Docketed to verso.
A sheriff summons for James Cox to appear at the Washington County Courthouse to "answer the petition of James Smith" on 1 March 1842. Notably, the document is completed and signed by Jabez Demming Giddings (1814-1878), an important figure in the Texas Republic and State of Texas.
In 1836, his elder brother Giles died of wounds received at the Battle of San Jacinto. He emigrated to Texas in order to claim Giles's land bounty. Arriving in Mount Vernon, Washington County, he worked as a school teacher and was elected the district court clerk in 1840. It is in this capacity that he signs this sheriff's summons.
In 1842, he enlisted in Captain Samuel A. Goart's Company in the Somervell expedition into Mexico. In 1844, he was admitted to the State Bar of Texas and opened a law practice in Brenham, and became instrumental in incorporating the town and organizing the Washington County Railroad. He was an incredibly wealthy man, owning 12 slaves as of the 1860 Slave Schedule. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate receiver and undertook a confidential mission from Governor Lubbok to Confederate Secretary Judah P. Benjamin. After the War, he served in the Texas state legislature and regained his fortune by 1870.
His brother DeWitt Clinton Giddings, Sr. (1827-1903), became his law partner in 1853. He served as a Lt. Colonel in the Confederate States Army and represented Texas in the U.S. House after the War, with Jabez playing an essential role in his campaigns. In 1866, the brothers founded one of hte states' earliest banks, Giddings and Giddings, acquired an oil factory, and became stockholders in the Houston and Texas Central Railway. A city was founded when the railway came through Lee County and was named in honor of Giddings.
An excellent Republic of Texas document signed by an influential and prominent Texan.
