- Lot Description
Half stock double-barreled percussion shotgun. .69 caliber. Both lockplates with "Parker" mark, rib marked "London Laminated Steel." Post-1868 Birmingham proof marks to barrel flats. Barrels approx. 32 1/8 in. Overall 49 1/8 in. long.
The metal components exhibit an overall dark patina. There is a crack to the bottom of the butt, else the stock is in good condition. The horn buttplate is worn to its carved face which bears a depiction of a buck's head. A small leather oval has been nailed into the bottom of the buttstock to fill a bored hole that was perhaps intended for a sling swivel.
Several British gunsmiths with the surname Parker operated during the 19th century. It is currently unknown to which the mark of just "Parker" belonged, though identical marks appear on double-barreled shotguns dated to the mid-century. English shotguns were readily imported for use by American hunters, and this example's decorated buttplate suggests that it was one such firearm.
