Morning Report of the Infantry at Fort Adams Commanded by Major John H. Buell. Manuscript document signed by Major John Buell. Fort Adams, [Mississippi Territory]. 28 December 1801. 1 page, 15 1/16 x 12 5/8 in. Docketed to verso.
An attractive and extremely detailed military report from Fort Adams in the Mississippi Territory. Prior to the acquisition of New Orleans in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Fort Adams was the Port of Entry of the Mississippi River for the United States, and therefore, strategically significant. In 1795, the United States and Spain signed the Treaty of San Lorenzo (alt. Pinckney's Treaty), which established the boundary between Spanish West Florida and the US Mississippi Territory. The site of the fort, on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, was deemed excellent for observing military movements on the river, and described by General James Wilkinson as "the most southerly tenable position within our limits."
The Treaty of Fort Adams, between the Choctaw and the United States Government, was signed just 11 days before this document, on December 17th. The treaty ceded over 2.5 million acres of Choctaw land and was the first in a series of treaties that eventually led to their expulsion from lands east of the Mississippi River.
