Beaded hide dress. circa 1920s. Hide, beads, and cowrie shells.
The beadwork on this dress features seed beads, tube beads, round glass beads, and sequins, is framed with cowrie-shell embellished fringe. Sequins, or spangles, surged in popularity in flapper dresses during the "Egypt Craze" of the 1920s, following Howard Carter's discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb. The employ of sequins and other trade goods, as seen in this Native American dress, speaks to the status of the wearer's family.
