Indian Family. Full-length hand-colored albumen CDV studio portrait. Ottawa, Kansas: A.W. Barker, n.d. Photographer's imprint printed to mount verso. Pencil title to mount recto.
Six Native Americans in view staring directly at the photographer's lens. Two women are seated in the front with a papoose positioned to face the camera. One man is crouched between them, and two others stand shoulder to shoulder in the back. They are all in native dress. The two women have necklaces and earrings visible from their drawn-back hair. Quilts are draped over their laps. The men are wearing shirts of different patterns and have their heads shaved. The image itself is hand-colored, highlighting their jewelry and garments.
The image was taken in Ottawa, Kansas, by photographer Albert W. Barker (1835-1913), who was active throughout the area between 1885-1895 (Mautz 244).
