Outdoor albumen CDV group view of the Osage Agency. Independence, Kansas: T.M Concannon, n.d. Photographer's imprint printed to recto. Early pencil sales price description to verso.
With thick forest behind them, this outdoor view displays Native Americans and white settlers grouped together, posed seated and standing for the camera. The Native Americans are dressed in a mixture of traditional and Western wear. The Osage had begun a series of treaties following the pressure to cede their land following the Louisiana Purchase, beginning with the Treaty of 1808. Throughout the 1800s, it continued until the Kansas Reservation lands were sold in 1865 in order to purchase a permanent residence in Indian territory. Confirmed by an Act of Congress approved on 5 June 1872, the Osage Nation Reservation was officially obtained by the tribe, equaling a total amount of 1,470,559 acres. The lands purchased became the final and permanent home of the Osage people.
