Full-length “outdoor” studio stereo view of an Apache Scout. Phoenix, Arizona: G.H. Rothrock, n.d. Photographer’s imprint printed to mount verso. Period ink identification to mount verso.
A view of an Apache man crouched in a natural landscape with a studio background, drawing a bow towards his directed gaze off-centered from the photographer’s lens. He is dressed in a loincloth with a piece of fabric tied around his neck, and a small dagger tied to his waist. His hair is long and loose.
George H. Rothrock (1843-1924) began his own photography studio in California, but quickly grew restless and determined to photograph the various Native American tribes of the West. Setting out for Yuma, Arizona, Rothrock and fellow photographer J.D. Young would hitch up roadside studio tents and photograph the native populations they encountered (Mautz 46).
This striking image is an interesting example of Rothrock’s roadside studio tents and documentation of Native Americans in Arizona.
