Three Ute Warriors. Three-quarter-length studio stereo view. Mercer, Pennsylvania: J.W. Shipler, n.d. Publisher's imprint printed to mount verso. Period ink identification to mount verso.
A view of three Ute Warriors, two seated and one centered in the middle. Staring directly at the photographer’s lens, each warrior is outfitted in Western vests and jackets, with a native blanket wrapped around their legs. Their hair is either bunched or braided, with shell necklaces, earrings, bits of fur, and rings decorating their appearances.
An arresting image taken by J.W. Shipler (1849-1913), who closed his studios in Pennsylvania and moved west, setting up shop in Denver before finally founding Shipler Commercial Photographers in Salt Lake City in 1890. His photographic dynasty would persist through generations until 1989.
