Plains breastplate of harness hide, featuring bone hairpipe beads, French barrel beads, brass ponchos, and bells. Late 19th-early 20th century.
This form originated with the Comanche in the mid-19th century, and its popularity spread rapidly among the Plains tribes. These breastplates were typically worn on ceremonial occasions, rather than in combat, but still the shell hairpipe beads seen in earlier examples were later passed over in favor of the more durable bone hairpipes.
