Half stock single-shot falling-block rifle. Stamped "40-1 7/8" underneath barrel. Patent mark on receiver. Serial number stamped under tang. Barrel octagonal and approx. 29 1/4 in. long. Overall length approx. 46 in.
While there is considerable oxidization on the receiver and barrel, the patina remains pleasing to the eye. The top of the barrel is stamped with "E. Remington & Sons. Ilioin. N.Y." just behind the rear sight. There is both a front sight at the end of the barrel and a Vernier sight behind the trigger, above a checkered tang. A side lever initiates the falling-block action to load the rifle. Overall, the wood remains in good quality, with only a few scuffs and small notches.
This rifle was designed by Lewis Hepburn for E. Remington & Sons. Hepburn, the mechanical department superintendent for Remington, patented the design in 1879. The rifle was produced from 1880 until 1907, featuring several variations. It also featured two additional patented designs by Hepburn: a rebounding hammer system and a side lever to adjust the breech block.
