Appraisal for the estate of Edward Turner decd. Madison County, Kentucky, 5 June 1803. 4 pages, 4to, 7 1/2 x 12 in. Docketed to verso. Framed to 22 x 18 in. Informational plaque to frame recto.
A complete appraisal for the estate of Edward Turner, who died in 1803 in Madison County, Kentucky. Included in his estate were four named enslaved individuals: "one Nagroe woman Named Rachael and Child... £120 / one Nagroe woman Named Rose... £90 / one Nagroe man Named Elisha... £120 / one Nagroe man Named Frederick... £130".
Overall, the Turner estate came to a total of £757.12, in which approximately 60% came from his enslaved individuals.
Not much is known about Edward Turner. He had four siblings born in the 1760s, so it's likely he was also born around this time. There is no record on if he married or had children, but at some point he most likely moved from Rowan County, North Carolina, where his siblings are listed as being born, to Madison County, Kentucky, where he died. Strangely enough, there are multiple advertisements in the Pittsburgh Weekly Gazette at the end of 1802 and beginning of 1803 from an Edward D. Turner placing a bounty on a freedom seeker — perhaps this is the same Edward Turner.
