Composite photograph of six members of the James–Younger Gang associated with the failed robbery of the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota, on September 7, 1876. The sitters (Bob Younger, Cole Younger, Jim Younger, Charlie Pitts, Clell Miller, and Bill Chadwell) are each identified by captions. All six were killed or captured during the raid and its ensuing pursuit.
On the afternoon of September 7, 1876, three robbers entered the Northfield bank, vaulted the counter, and demanded that the safe be opened. Cashier Joseph Lee Heywood refused, and townspeople quickly armed themselves in resistance. Forced to flee with only loose change from the counter, the gang was fired upon as it escaped: Miller and Chadwell were shot dead in the streets, while the others split up and attempted to elude capture.
Two weeks later, near Madelia, Minnesota, a posse intercepted Charlie Pitts and the Younger brothers. Pitts was killed in the exchange, while Bob, Cole, and Jim Younger (badly wounded) were captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. Frank and Jesse James escaped back to Missouri.
This composite brings together the principal fugitives whose fates effectively ended the James–Younger partnership, documenting one of the most consequential thwarted bank robberies of the nineteenth century and the citizen resistance that unraveled it.
