Paul Cadmus (American, 1904–1999)
Attributed.

A refined and deeply expressive figurative study associated with the celebrated American master Paul Cadmus—an artist whose work helped redefine the representation of the human body in 20th-century art.

Executed in graphite on paper, this composition presents a seated male figure rendered with remarkable sensitivity to anatomy, light, and contour. The subject, captured in a contemplative pose, reveals Cadmus’ signature ability to merge classical draftsmanship with psychological depth, creating a composition that feels both intimate and timeless.

The careful modeling of musculature, the fluid transitions of shadow, and the subtle tension within the pose demonstrate a strong academic foundation reminiscent of Renaissance figure studies—while simultaneously reflecting the modern sensibility that made Cadmus a defining voice in American realism.

Cadmus is widely recognized for his unapologetic exploration of the male form and his contribution to the visibility of queer identity in art history. Today, works associated with his circle and style are increasingly valued not only for their technical excellence, but also for their role within the broader narrative of artistic freedom, individuality, and cultural expression.

This drawing stands as a compelling example of that legacy—where discipline, beauty, and identity converge in a single, quietly powerful image.
