- Lot Description
This exceptional Pair of Monumental Shiwilu Hand-Carved Wood Stools is an original creation by distinguished Peruvian Amazonian artist Reyter Mozombite Maca of Jeberos, Alto Amazonas, Loreto. Sculpted entirely by hand, each stool has been carved from a single solid piece of tornillo wood, without separately constructed legs, joints, nails, or assembled structural components.
The pair displays two distinct yet complementary sculptural forms. The larger example presents an elongated, organically shaped seat supported by powerful vertical forms, while the second develops a more compact rounded silhouette with subtly irregular supports. The natural grain, knots, tonal transitions, and individual characteristics of the timber remain deliberately visible, making the material itself an essential part of the composition.
Carving an entire functional structure from one continuous mass of solid wood requires careful understanding of the timber, its grain, balance, strength, and natural irregularities. Rather than concealing these characteristics, Mozombite incorporates them into the finished works, producing objects that exist simultaneously as functional furniture and contemporary Amazonian sculpture.
The remarkably restrained forms give the stools a powerful modern presence while remaining deeply connected to the ancestral woodworking knowledge of the Shiwilu people of Jeberos, Loreto. Each piece is individually conceived and carved, ensuring that its proportions, grain patterns, coloration, and organic sculptural character are entirely unique.
Works by Reyter Mozombite Maca, including pairs of his hand-carved stools, have previously been presented through auctions organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI).
ARTIST
Reyter Miguel Mozombite Maca was born in Jeberos, Alto Amazonas, Loreto, Peru, in 1974. An artist and agriculturalist associated with the Shiwilu cultural tradition, his work reflects generations of Amazonian knowledge centered on woodworking and the responsible use of forest resources.
His sculptural stools are particularly distinguished by their solid construction, organic silhouettes, substantial physical presence, and remarkable ability to transform a single section of timber into an elegant and functional sculptural object.

These works are completely original and individually hand-carved creations by Reyter Mozombite Maca and were acquired directly from the artist in Peru.

Condition
Excellent overall condition. Both stools are structurally sound and retain their original natural wood surfaces, grain, knots, tonal variations, and organic characteristics. Minor surface marks, natural fissures, irregularities, and variations in coloration are inherent to the solid timber and entirely handmade construction and contribute to the unique character of each work.
