Factorum et Dictorum' by Valerius Maximus is an important collection of historical anecdotes from Roman and Greek history meant to be used in the study of rhetoric, but containing many interesting tidbits for even the casual reader. Valerius was active during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius (14-37) and was a contemporary of Ovid.
This edition was composed by the Dutch theologian and professor Antonius Thysius, and is filled with his commentary throughout, including excerpts in Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek script. It contains a unique title page, comprised of a full-page engraving of a woman, probably Aphrodite, holding a spear and cornucopia, her left foot atop a tortoise, a banner embroidered with the title of the book dangling from her left hand. The engraving was performed by Dutch artist R. A. Persyn.
This 1660 edition was published by Franciscum Hackium in Leiden, The Netherlands, written here with the Latin name Lugdunum Batavorum.
