Confessions of St. Augustine' is one of the most influential and important Christian works in history and is widely considered to be the first Western autobiography. The book details Augstine's life, from his youth in the city of Carthage where he spent his time carousing with ne'er-do-wells, through his experimentation with esoteric philosophy and Manichaeism, up to his conversion to Christianity.
This French translation was composed by Robert Arnauld d'Andilly (1589-1674), a Conseilleur d'Etat in the regency court of Marie de' Medici, Queen of France. He was one of the foremost poets of 17th century France and was extremely influential in the Jansenist movement of the time.
This book was published in 1671 in the city of Paris by Pierre le Petit, printer and bookseller to King Louis XIV, the Sun King. Pierre was deeply connected to the Jansenist movement himself and published many works by the Jansenist authors.
