Apologie Pour Les Catholiques, Contre les Faussetez & les Calomnies d'un Livre IntituleÌ: La Politique Du ClergeÌ De France' or 'Apology for Catholics, Against Falsehoods & Calumnies from a Book Entitled: The Politics of the Clergy of France' is a French Jansenist apologetics book by one of the leading Jansenists of the 17th century, Antoine Arnauld (1612-1694), a Parisian polymath with a storied career beginning at the Sorbonne. Jansenism was a movement within the Catholic Church to reconcile the concepts of free will and divine grace and later evolved to oppose royal absolutism. The movement was introduced to France by Arnauld's mentor, Jean du Vergier de Hauranne.
The last 6 pages of the book are inscribed by hand with copies of letters between Antoine Arnauld and Robert Southwell, an Anglo-Irish politician and diplomat who was involved in the trial of his friend Edward Colman, who was then executed during the hysteria of the 'Popish Plot'.
The title page is inscribed with two crossed out names, and a third name which is left untouched and can be seen again on one of the front blank leaves.
