- Lot Description
A 1685 edition of Bishop Antoine Godeau's commentaries on Saint Paul's epistles to the Romans and to the Corinthians. Both with separate title pages, Romans having a stunning full-page engraving of a Christian religious scene. Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) was appointed Bishop of Grasse by the famous Cardinal Richelieu in 1636. He is most well known for his prolific corpus of religious texts, however, he is also an accomplished poet in the Baroque French Précieuses style. This 1685 leatherbound and gilt French language edition was published by Leonard Plaignard in Lyon, France. Consisting of two parts in 1 volume. Romans: [100], 137, [1] pp.; Corinthians 254 pp.5 3/4 x 3 1/2 in., (14.5 x 9 cm.)Very good with expected signs of age. Binding tight and secure. Hand-written ex libris to title page cut off, possibly evidence of 18th century trimming and rebinding.
