This is a collection of comics from the years 1835-1843 by the famed British caricaturist and illustrator George Cruikshank (1792-1878) accompanied by poems from a variety of authors, including William Makepeace Thackeray, Albert Smith, and Gilbert A Beckett, among many others.
Cruikshank is most famous for his collaboration and friendship with Charles Dickens for whom he illustrated such novels as Oliver Twist Sketches by Boz, and the Mudfog Papers, among others. He also had the honor of illustrating the first English edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales.
This edition was published in 1872 by James Camden Hotten of London. It features gorgeous Victorian green binding with gilt lettering and design, with a gilt facsimile signature of Cruikshank on the front cover.
The front endpapers are signed by two different hands. One from Christmas day, signed Henry J. Rabone Dec 1872. The other is difficult to make out but appears to say September 21st, 1968, and includes a name which we could not read.
