A cuirass breastplate, most likely from the 17th or early 18th century, possibly French or German. Forged steel with dark patina and surface oxidation consistent with age. The engraved scrolling foliage on the chest is decorative and typical of officers' armor of this era. The breastplate is shaped to deflect blows, especially at the center ridge (medial ridge). The cluster of bullet-like dents (often referred to as proof marks) in the center was sometimes added intentionally to demonstrate the armor’s resistance to firearms, though usually not in such quantity, indicating possible battle damage. The flared skirt edge and elegant form are consistent with cavalry cuirassier armor worn by mounted troops.
L: 18 1/2 in., (47 cm.)
Good condition overall, with some rust in places. Collar with a small split.
