Of classic almond-shaped form with a slightly pointed apex and turned brim, the steel surface is decorated with deeply etched bands of foliate scrollwork and strapwork enclosing cartouches bearing armorial devices and figures. The riveted lower edge is adorned with a series of brass flower-headed rivets. Retains traces of original gilding in recesses.
This type of cabasset, derived from the Spanish "cabaça," meaning "skull," was among the most popular infantry helmets of the late Renaissance, favored throughout Italy, Spain, and Northern Europe. The fine etched ornament suggests Milanese production, likely from one of the Lombard workshops supplying both civic militias and noble households.
H: 8 in., (20 cm.)
Very good for its age with light pitting throughout the surface. A small hole to the top of the ridge. Retains its original brass florets on the rivets. The plume holder is intact and present.
