- Lot Description
A closed helmet (close helm) that has been converted into a jousting helmet (later alteration (grille) made for the Gioco del Ponte).
The underlying form is consistent with a 16th-century close helmet, rounded skull, high comb, and a lower bevor (chin defense) line. The faceplate consists of riveted vertical bars, not originally part of standard close helms. These bars have been added externally, replacing the original visor.
Such grilles were added for jousting or foot combat in tournaments, especially where full-face protection was needed, but with some airflow and audience visibility.

A similar example can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum (object Number: 14.25.502).
