A 19th-century, wrought iron clockwork-driven roasting jack mechanism with a spring that can be wound up with a key. The clock mechanism gently rotates the spit, ensuring even browning and cooking of small hunting game pieces. These clockwork roasting jacks gained popularity from the 18th to the 19th centuries in a pre-industrial era. They were commonly used with smaller fires for roasting smaller pieces of meat such as chickens, sausages, and fish. These devices were originally a French invention that spread quickly to the rest of Europe and North America. The central clock box has a duck on top.H: 13 1/2 in. (34 cm), L of skewer: 26 in. (66 cm)
