An oval porcelain plaque finely painted in polychrome enamels with a tender devotional scene of the Madonna holding the Christ Child, the Child standing nude beside her and holding a slender cross, the composition derived from High Renaissance models, ultimately after Raphael. The figures are rendered with delicate flesh tones, soft chiaroscuro, and carefully modulated drapery in rose, blue, and gray, set against a dark atmospheric ground. The plaque is mounted in a period gilt-metal frame with applied Rococo-style scrolling and foliate ornament, the surrounding mount and old glass suggesting a decorative object intended for domestic or private devotional display. The quality of the painting and refinement of execution are consistent with Viennese or South German porcelain painting traditions of the mid-19th century, likely intended to imitate miniature oil painting on porcelain rather than mass-produced wares.
7 x 5 1/2 in., (17.8 x 14 cm.)
The plaque appears intact with no visible cracks or restorations. Minor light wear and surface marks consistent with age.
