- Lot Description
A 19th century Ottoman Janissary yataghan with the characteristic eared hilt composed of two carved bone grip-plates fastened to the tang by three steel rivets. The midrib of the grip is comprised of steel decorated with chased floral motifs. The single-edged, recurved blade has two narrow fullers and is decorated brilliantly with gold-inlaid inscriptions at the center on each side, as well as gold patterning around the guard.
The Arabic inscription reads as follows: Made by haji (pligrim) Shareef Agha, Owner Halil (Khaleel) 1255 (Circa Greg. 1839) Ä°nscription: عمل الØاج الشري٠آغا صاØب خليل 1255.
The scabbard is comprised of wood wrapped in stitched brown leather with vertical ribs.

Condition
Blade appears to be in near-perfect condition, with some small black spots in places. Gold inlay is entirely preserved. The scabbard is in good condition with some light wear to the surface. The blade fits the scabbard well.
