The porcelain cup of cylindrical form with slightly flared lip, decorated with a deep cobalt-blue ground enriched with finely executed gilt ornament in repeating neoclassical motifs, interrupted by a hand-painted landscape cartouche depicting a river scene with rocky outcrop, architecture, and figures in the distance, executed in soft polychrome enamels. The rim, foot, and handle are richly gilt, the handle of looped form with gilt finish. The matching saucer decorated en suite with a cobalt-blue border densely overlaid with gilt scrollwork and pendants, surrounding a plain glazed well with a central gilt circle. The quality of the gilding, the refined miniature landscape painting, and the restrained neoclassical ornament are characteristic of French porcelain production of the Empire or early Restoration period, possibly Parisian or Limoges, made for the luxury domestic market rather than export. The absence of factory marks is consistent with many French private or decorating ateliers of the period.
H: 3 1/4 in., (8.2 cm.) D: 5 cm., (12.7 cm.)
Cup with light wear to the gilding and minor interior staining consistent with age and use. Saucer with wear to the gilt border and some discoloration to the underside footrim. No visible cracks or restorations.
