The cylindrical porcelain cup, finely decorated with a hand-painted classical profile portrait identified beneath as "aurelian", after antique Roman intaglio or engraved gem sources, the bust shown in grisaille against a cobalt-blue ground within a gilt-edged oval reserve. The remaining surfaceis enriched with delicate gilded foliate borders, including a classical anthemion-style frieze beneath the rim and a small gilt sprig opposite the handle. The handle of graceful loop form, entirely gilt. The accompanying saucer en suite, with a broad gilt rim and plain well-centered by a single gilt circle.
The restrained neoclassical palette, use of portrait medallion, and high-quality gilding are characteristic of French Empire porcelain, most likely Paris or Sèvres workshop production, circa 1805–1815, reflecting contemporary fascination with Roman antiquity during the Napoleonic period.
H: 2 1/2 in., (6.4 cm.) D: 5 1/8 in., (13 cm.)
Cup in good condition with light wear to the gilding. The cup has a small crack. Saucer with surface wear. No visible restoration.
