The porcelain cup of cylindrical form, raised on three small gilt paw feet and fitted with a finely modeled gilt handle terminating in a scroll, richly decorated with a deep ruby-red ground framed by heavy burnished gilding. One side of the cup is painted with a finely executed sepia-toned landscape scene depicting a riverside view with bridge, watermill buildings, trees, and figures, likely inspired by French or Northern European views, executed in the manner of printed engravings translated into porcelain painting. The rim and foot are gilt, with a narrow repeating border in gold separating the landscape panel from the colored ground. The matching saucer is decorated en suite, with a wide ruby-red band, heavy gilt borders, and a central landscape medallion echoing the subject of the cup. The refined use of monochrome landscape painting combined with rich grounds and gilding reflects French Empire and Restoration-period taste, associated with Parisian porcelain and decorating workshops of the early to mid-19th century.
