- Lot Description
A finely crafted German flintlock Jagdgewehr (hunting rifle), dating to approximately 1750, featuring a long octagonal steel barrel and elaborate full-stocked walnut body with carved and checkered decoration. The lockplate is of flat bevelled form and retains its original flint configuration, with a swan-neck cock and faceted pan. The stock is adorned with intricate raised relief carving, including a stylized leaf motif to the butt and foliate scrolls at the wrist.
The brass mounts are deeply engraved and finely cast, comprising a long pierced sideplate, buttplate, trigger guard with finger rest, and a sliding brass patchbox lid with rococo ornamentation. The wooden stock also features a raised cheekpiece with brass inlay and inlaid oval escutcheons. Set trigger configuration.
L: 43 1/2 in., (110 cm.)
Condition
The hexagonal barrel is lightly pitted. The stock is in good condition with light scratches. Brass furniture is well preserved. The trigger guard has a tiny repair. Good action. Flat round bore 18mm. diameter.
