A German-made percussion rifle-musket imported for use in the American Civil War, "Baden" model 1842-style infantry musket, percussion-converted, imported to the U.S. and marked "OHIO" on the stock. Manufactured in Germany (Baden or Prussia) in the mid-19th century, modeled after the French 1822 series or similar designs. Imported into the United States during the Civil War (1861–1865) to arm Union forces due to the massive demand for firearms. Marked "OHIO," this is a state ownership stamp indicating it was issued by the State of Ohio Militia or State Troops, many of whom were equipped from state arsenals before being federalized.
Single-shot muzzle-loading percussion musket. Caliber likely around .69 to .71. Iron furniture, full-length stock, front and rear sling swivels. Barrel likely retained the front sight, doubling as a bayonet lug. Lock resembles the French M1822 T conversion type, a common pattern used in German state arsenals.
These muskets were part of the large variety of foreign arms acquired by the Union, especially in the early war years (1861–62). Considered second-tier weapons, used often by state troops, training units, or in rear-line service. Known for being rugged and serviceable, though not always favored over Springfield or Enfield types.
L: 57 1/4 in. (145 cm.)
Overall good. Smooth, round bore, very lightly pitted. Stockis is lightly scratched. Ramrod original. Mechanical action sound. Flat round bore 20mm diameter.
