Carved from a single length of mature bamboo, the cane of natural segmented form and warm honey-brown patina, intricately worked in relief with a continuous composition of aquatic motifs, including large carp swimming among reeds and pine branches, interspersed with smaller fish and stylized foliage. The terminal is carved as a rounded knop decorated with concentric circular bosses, the surface polished smooth through handling. The shaft retains visible nodes and natural taper, the carving integrating seamlessly with the bamboo structure in the manner typical of Edo-period decorative walking sticks produced for both domestic use and export. Fitted at the tip with a metal ferrule. Japanese work, 19th century.
L: 38 in., (96.5 cm.)
Very good, with some hairline cracks due to drying of wood. No significant damage or loss.
