- Lot Description
Slender Japanese walking stick or cane finely carved from a single length of bamboo, the surface decorated throughout with incised and relief-carved ornamental bands arranged in segmented registers. The decoration includes repeating geometric patterns, checkerboard motifs, stylized chrysanthemum blossoms, scrolling foliage, radiating starbursts, and diaper-pattern carving, all characteristic of late Edo to Meiji-period bamboo decorative arts. The shaft is divided by raised collars forming distinct sections, each elaborately engraved with differing motifs, creating a rhythmic visual progression along the length of the cane. The patinated surface shows a rich honey-brown tone with darker highlights in the incised areas, emphasizing the depth and intricacy of the carving. The handle end is gently rounded and carved with additional geometric ornament, suggesting both functional use and aesthetic refinement. Such canes were produced both for domestic use and for export during the 19th century, reflecting Japanese virtuosity in bamboo carving and the growing international market for decorative objects.
