Hard-paste porcelain of cylindrical form, the domed lid surmounted by a finely modeled seated lapdog with long ears and tail, painted in naturalistic tones and wearing an red-orange ribbon bow. The box and cover are decorated with scattered red-orange flower sprigs with yellow accents, with red-orange and gilt banding at the rim. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark of the Meissen manufactory, with incised and painted inventory or work numbers. The lively modeling of the dog finial and the restrained floral decoration are characteristic of Meissen table and toilet wares produced during the 1930s and 1940s, reflecting the taste for intimate, decorative objects combining animal sculpture with functional porcelain forms.
