- Lot Description
Miniature stringed instrument of teardrop form, the soundboard constructed of joined spruce panels framed by applied scrolling and foliate metal mounts in low relief, surrounding a circular sound hole. The neck fitted with simple brass tuners and terminating in a carved dragon or grotesque head finial, the body of dark polished wood with a smooth rounded back. Strung with fine metal strings and retaining its original proportions, conceived as a virtuoso cabinet piece or novelty instrument rather than a child’s toy, reflecting late 19th-century fascination with miniature decorative objects and musical curiosities.
