A finely oval relief plaque depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, executed in a warm-toned alabaster. The composition is deeply modeled with remarkable detail: the Virgin bends toward the Christ Child laid upon a woven cradle, surrounded by Joseph, shepherds, a young boy and attendants, all rendered with expressive gestures and flowing drapery. Architectural elements in low relief form the background.
The plaque is signed "MATTEI" at the lower rim, corresponding to the Italian sculptor or workshop active in Rome and Florence in the late 19th century, known for devotional bas-reliefs and classical subjects. Mattei ateliers commonly produced high-quality carved ivory-colored plaques for ecclesiastical and domestic settings.
Presented in its original round wooden frame with a gilt and velvet inner surround and protective convex glass.
15 3/8 x 12 1/2 in., (39.1 x 31.8 cm.)
Overall, very good condition. Minor age-related surface wear and natural inclusions are typical of the material. Frame with expected handling wear and small separations consistent with age.
