A finely decorated Sikh war quoit known as a chakram, traditionally used by Nihang Akali warriors. The ring is forged of steel and richly embellished with dense gold koftgari floral ornament arranged in continuous bands of stylized blossoms and leafy tendrils. The outer and inner borders are worked with geometric braided designs framing the central floral frieze.
Chakrams were distinctive weapons of the Sikh martial tradition and were worn on the turban or across the chest by Akali warriors who practiced the art of Gatka. Decorative examples such as this were produced for high-ranking Sikhs and for ceremonial display and are significantly scarcer than plain fighting rings. The workmanship and gilt decoration suggest a workshop of the Punjab region during the late Sikh Empire or early British period.
D: 7 in., (17.8 cm.)
The surface retains much of the original gold koftgari with minor age-related wear. The steel patina is even and stable and the decorative bands remain sharp and detailed. Overall, a well-preserved and rare example.
