- Lot Description
Mixed media on paper, likely watercolor and graphite with ink outlines, depicting a standing haloed saint in liturgical vestments, holding a censer suspended on chains. The elongated vertical format and restrained, contemplative expression are characteristic of preparatory studies associated with Russian Symbolist and Neo-Orthodox church decoration at the turn of the 20th century. The saint is shown frontally beneath an arched architectural motif, with stylized ornamental elements and a subdued palette of ochres, blues, and soft earth tones. The handling reflects an emphasis on spiritual mood and inward devotion rather than narrative detail, consistent with Nesterov’s approach to ecclesiastical subjects and mural design. Signed with a monogram at lower right. Presented in an early framed mount with hand-painted blue and gilt border lines, likely original or period.
